i’m not friends with her on facebook, and she’s not searchable, so i can’t friend her or send her messages

i’m asking anyone that is friends with her on facebook to call her out on this

this is past the point of her amusing distaste for things that she doesn’t understand and entering the territory of dangerous, hateful, and unforgivable

i will not fucking tolerate this shit anywhere in the world, but especially not on SMCM’s campus

does anyone know if it’s possible for me to report this to anyone on campus? because i will, if it’s possible for me to do so. i’m done playing nice. i’m done respecting “opinions” that encourage violence and oppression. i’m fucking done with it.

EDIT: i actually just sent this screenshot in an email to Clint Neill. i’m not sure if there’s anything that can be done, since the post wasn’t directed at anyone on campus, but i couldn’t just sit here and not do anything about it. i will keep you all updated on what comes of this.

This is complete and utter hate speech. Which made me go through To The Point, only to realize SMCM doesn’t HAVE a policy on “hate speech.” The phrase isn’t even in the damn book.

i just got an email back from Clint Neill, which reads as follows:

[…] On my end, I have reported this to the Office of Informational Technology (who controls our network) and to Kelly Smolinsky, the interim Judicial Affairs Officer.  I am not sure we can do much since it is a free speech issue and is hosted on Facebook (not our network), but I am very concerned that a student may have used our network to disseminate hate.  I will update you as soon as possible on what I hear from them.  I did not include that you reported it so you were kept anonymous. 

 

I was able to access her page and I printed off the materials if we needed physical proof.  I also saved the link to the video in case someone needed it for evidence.  I also flagged her post to Facebook as depicting graphic violence.  If you are comfortable revisiting her page you should definitely flag the posting and report it to Facebook.  I am almost certain that it violates their Terms of Service.  You could flag it as graphic violence on hate speech towards one’s gender or sexual orientation.

 

Even if we can’t do something judicially, I will ask that a conversation happen with the student.

we’ll see how this pans out, but i’m glad to see some action being attempted to be taken.

but keep calling her out personally, because just one talking to isn’t going to do much good.

i’ve sent a second email to Clint Neill, with screenshots of the entire comment thread, and this message:

Thank you so much for your prompt response and action, Clint. I really appreciate it.

I don’t know if you noticed on the thread, but the problem is escalating. I’m attaching screen shots of the comments on the thread, because they have escalated to blatant threats of death against all gay and transgender people, and an attack on another student based upon her family’s religious expressions.

I and other students have reported the post to Facebook for hate speech and graphic violence, but because she is a student on this campus, I would like to find a way to make something happen here. It was one thing for her to post a video of other people committing violence — it’s another for her to claim that gay and trans* people need to be “put to death” and “we must kill dem” [sic]. 

These comments have made myself and other students extremely uncomfortable. This is creating an unsafe environment on this campus. This is someone who lives on campus and is, therefore, in this environment at all times. And who knows if she is not the only person on campus who thinks this way.

We feel unsafe now, Clint. And it’s clear that this is what this student wants. I don’t know what you or anyone else can do, but the truth is that this student is frightening other students and that needs to stop.

Thanks, again, for your response and I hope to hear back from you with further instructions.

I forward all the information and then some this morning to the judicial affairs officer and the assistant vice president for information technology. 

 

My understanding is that the Behavioral Intervention Team met this morning and discussed this incident.  They are pursuing what they can do formally (discussing with the College’s attorney since this could be a first amendment issue) but they are also reaching out to [CuteAzz] informally.

 

If you currently feel unsafe, contact Public Safety.  I’m currently in my office so you can call me and I will meet you at Public Safety.  [removed].  I can go with you and file a report.  In order to initiate any sort of discussion about removing a student who is a threat, you have to go to Public Safety.  If this is an emergency, call [removed].

 

When I leave my office, I will email you and let you know when you can call my cell phone.  That number is [removed].

 

I will make sure that Judicial Affairs and Information Technology has those updated screencaptures.

if you would like to contact Clint Neill separately about this issue, feel free to do so. if you plan on referencing any information in or regarding his responses to my emails, please talk to me before doing so. i will gladly forward the email to you and you can respond directly to the email. i do not want this to in any way become an issue where we are in any way the culprits of something inappropriate.

at this moment, i am not filing a report with Public Safety, because i was not personally targeted in these threats and i do not want to water down the issue in case there are personal threats made and someone else needs to report it.

additionally, the debate in the comments thread has begun to involve heavy religious propaganda, in addition to a discussion of racism. CuteAzz and her friend Yarah’ahla are claiming that because the trans* people in the video are white that they, as People of Color, are expressing frustrations that stem from racism and white supremacy. i no longer feel even qualified to enter the discussion, because i do not want to refute their claims of oppression, but i do not know how to call out their violent transmisogyny and cissexism without potentially doing so.

if anyone knows of a way to approach this issue, or would like to weigh in on the discussion as a PoC, please feel free to do so. i would really love to get more perspectives on this, because what it is right now is cis PoC arguing with white cis women over, presumably, the rights of white trans* people and white queers.

I know she has always been a problem but this is so very wrong. I honestly don’t believe that claims of “racial impression” where they obviously don’t exist can be made. The situation has nothing to do with race, but gender and sexual identification. Needless to say, I sincerely hope something happens to get her some help because not only is she a danger to the trans/queer community, but she is a danger to anyone who does not share her beliefs.

As true as this may be, I continue to hold true to the fact that it is never ok to tell somebody to go die. Be they scum or not.

To build up on this. You can’t promote any cause with hate. Hate breeds hate breeds more hate. And I’m not just going to take this from a “cis” perspective, but how about from a minority perspective where I am “oppressed”. It’s okay to feel angry, but to act upon that anger in any situation will do little to change anything.
